A youth organisation for young people aged 6-17 years providing training in first aid, caring for others and various other related issues. It allows opportunities for community service, leisure pursuits, leadership and personal development for all ages. The youth department of St John Ambulance is divided into cadets aged 10-17 years and Badgers who are 6-10 years. Although First Aid is necessarily the main topic for the Cadets, the Grand Prior Award Scheme offers young people the chance to study other issues including caring, emergency procedures, camping, leisure pursuits and the new "Society" section which is proving very popular. Training is available in leadership skills and instructional techniques and there is a busy peer educators group who 'teach' topics relevant to today's teenagers (not necessarily St John members!). Young people are encouraged to take decisions and put forward ideas in a democratic way through the Youth Council network. The new training package for unit leaders looks interesting and promising.
The Badgers have their own programme divided into nine sections of learning activities and fun. On completion (and after three years) they can gain the Super Badger award.
