MID DEVON CVS SPRING TRAINING PROGRAMME - Mid Devon Training Programme
Sexual Health Awareness and Young People – this is a one day introductory course from Positive Action South West that is designed for people who are working with young people (13 – 25yrs). It is FREE and is being held at a number of venues across Devon in coming months. For details see PASW Training
Sexual Health and Relationships Training - Free training for people working with young people around sex and relationship issues. For details see FREE Sexual Health Training but courses include the following.
- Sexual Health Awareness and Young People – a 1 day course introducing workers to sexual health issues for young people. This is a good introduction or great refresher for all workers.
- Delay – ‘lets leave it till later’ – a 1 day course for those with recent sexual health training. This builds on the holistic model and looks at building skills to enhance young people’s decisions to delay early sex and to support their emotional development.
- C-Card – ½ day training for those wishing to participate in Devon’s C-Card pilot scheme. C-Card is a condom distribution scheme for workers who want to improve young people’s access to condom
Youth Work Training Advice - The National Youth Agency has published a revised set of FAQs on youth work training on its website. Practical fundraising support - 4 fundraising courses and 2 management skills taking place in Exeter in April. Each half day course costs £59 plus VAT. Courses can be viewed and booked online at www.companysolutions.biz. All the courses also give a free first year’s membership to the Practical Fundraising Association with a weekly email of fundraising support as well as email advice at any time. www.practicalfundraising.com

Coping with Recession & Diversifying your Income – this Total Support Training Workshop being run as part of the Devon Consortium project. It will cover: Social Enterprise and options for Legal Structures - Financial planning hot tips: budgeting; planning; loans/share capital; risk management and more - Working together on Local Authority contracts and an introduction to Tendering The day training is being held at several venues across Devon and for details see: Total Support Project Training
Improving Outcomes for BME young people The Children’s Society is providing free cultural diversity awareness and participation training in five English regions, including the South West. The training is for youth practitioners and youth justice workers and is tailored to the needs of your organisation. UK Youth’s New Level 2 Peer Qualifications - UK Youth have developed 4 new qualifications, a level 2 Peer Education Award and Certificate, and a level 2 Peer Mentoring Award and Certificate. All of the qualifications are open to young people aged 14 years and above and are made up of mandatory units and optional units. These new qualifications are intended to provide added creditability to peer education and peer mentoring through recognition of the valuable role it plays in non-formal teaching and learning. Children’s Rights - The NSPCC has released an online training toolkit to help children's professionals to uphold children's rights. It is intended for anyone who comes into contact with children and young people in their work, leisure or voluntary activities and has been developed in collaboration with the Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE). LYN Training Fund - individuals working (paid/unpaid) with a local group registered with its Local Youth Network are eligible to apply for funding for training. AXS00 Basic Awareness of Integrated Working – this is a self-assessment document that provides information about the AXS Pathway and what integrated working is and how the AXS pathway works in Devon AXS00 Training.
AXS01 Train the Trainers - This course is designed for experienced trainers within Children’s Trust agencies to learn the content of the ‘Introduction to integrated working: AXS01’ programme and pass it on to staff in their agency.
AXS02 Integrated Working – Managing the practice is a one-day course to help operational managers develop a deeper understanding and knowledge of the complexities and challenges of integrated working, and understand how their roles will influence effective practice.
AXS03 Using Integrated Working Tools is a two-day course that aims to promote the use of Integrated Working (IW) tools and processes. The course will help participants develop practical skills and confidence in completing Common Assessments, understanding the Team Around the Child process and the role of Lead Professional.
AXS04 training course – this is available for 3 Level 3 practitioners and frontline managers who provide specialist services to children and young people and who want to have a better understanding of the interface between statutory level 3 needs and services and level 2 needs and services within the Common Assessment Framework. There are a course on 30th March at Dartington. The CWDC IYSS and Integrated working budget can fund places.See AXS04 Training

Effective Voluntary Sector Management – this online course from NCVO started again in October. The course allows participants to find out more about how the sector works, with units covering topics such as governance and fundraising. The course is accredited by Roehampton University and participants can study when and where it suits them. For more information visit www.workingforacharity.org.uk

Distance Learning Courses and Qualifications for the voluntary, charity & not-for-profit sectors. All courses and qualifications are fully accredited by the University of Wales, Lampeter. Working with Parents - this is a four day foundation programme facilitated by Devon Working with Parents trainers to develop and build on knowledge and skills essential for positive working relationships with families. The course is recommended for all staff working with families. The programme is fully aligned with the National Occupational Standards and the recommendations of the National Academy of Parenting Practitioners, and is part of Devon’s Parenting Strategy. The course covers:
• the principles and values which underpin working in partnership with parents
• the importance of the parenting role
• the parent/child relationship
• how to achieve accreditation as a parenting practitioner.

New BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work Work-based Route - As from September 2010, all new professional qualifications in Youth Work will be at honours degree level, or higher. UCP Marjon’s new work-based route to qualifying as a Youth & Community Worker, validated to run from September 2009, builds on their experience of over 10 years as the only higher education institution in the south west offering a part-time route in Youth and Community Work. New qualification for volunteers who help at events - ASDAN is pleased to announce a 2 credit (20 hour) qualification for volunteers. The aim of the qualification is to enable volunteers to develop skills and knowledge needed to make an effective contribution at an event. It is appropriate for young people (14+) and adults who contribute to an event as a volunteer (for example at summer activities / PAYP schemes, community festivals, sports and music festivals or a general fundraising event). Tendering qualification - Following a year of development work and a pilot course the first professional qualification for staff in charities and Third Sector engaged in public sector tendering and procurement has been launched. The Tendering and Procurement Practice (TaPP) course is accredited at level 3 by the Open College Network (OCN) with 6 credits. Downloads giving full details, including fees and possible grant aid to help with fees can be found at the course website, www.tappocn.org.uk. Bookings are now being taken for courses to start from October 2009.

THE OPEN UNIVERSITY can help you develop your workforce -there is the Certificate in Work with Young People for instance and help is available to find work placements and qualified supervisors which may be of help to voluntary organisations who may not be able to provide these things themselves. TRAIN TO GAIN - There is presently up to £1000 Train to Gain funding available to help develop leadership and management skills. This could be accessed to help pay for appropriate training courses. If you haven’t accessed this fund before, and your organisation has between 5 and 249 members of staff/volunteers, you could be eligible. DMU Youth Affairs experts offer short courses (one or two days) on a range of subjects including: Social exclusion, active citizenship, emotional literacy and outcomes led evaluation are just some of the topics that can be studied on a new programme of short courses on offer from the Youth Affairs Unit at De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester. THE TERRENCE HIGGINS TRUST is offering free sexual health training to professionals working with young people across England and Wales.
